Set in the fictional small town of Riverton, New Mexico, A Faithful Guardian by Louise M. Gouge is a Love Inspired book that follows the enemies to lovers trope.

Single mother Lauren Parker and her disabled teenage daughter, Zoey, move to Riverton, hoping for a fresh start where Zoey can meet new people and escape the bullies in her big city school.

Robert Mattson, a father of three and owner of one of the state’s largest ranch, bears many responsibilities. Besides raising his children, he also watches for his widowed mother, the ranch and other ranchers, as president of the Cattle Association.

Robert and Lauren meet when Robert confronts her about stealing his precious work dog. Ouch! I’ll let the reader find out how that conversation ends. 

I love this book for several reasons. First, the theme of forgiveness is a personal favorite of mine. I also love Louise’s portrait of Robert. He’s an alpha-hero who steps on the toes of his family and those he loves in an effort to protect them. A little heavy-handed at times, one can view him as “controlling”. But don’t worry, this is part of his character arc. By the end of the book, he realizes his mistake and works on making amends. Phew! My other favorite characteristic of this novel is Louise’s rich descriptions of cowboy life. I often felt like I was reading a clean version of the television show “Yellowstone”! And that’s a big winner, right there.
