Cookies for Christmas
“Abuela, what do you call this kind of cookie?” Alicia, my five-year-old granddaughter, stood on a stool I kept in the kitchen for when she wanted to help.
“They’re polvorones, and they’re popular in Spain, where I was born.” I dropped the lard, sugar, and cinnamon into a mixing bowl, then handed her an electric mixer.
Her forehead wrinkled in concentration as she stirred the ingredients. “Did you and Mom bake together too?”
“Yes, all the time. And we especially enjoyed these treats during the Christmas season. They’re my favorite.”
“Why do you like polvorones so much?” Curious eyes watched me as I dusted flour off my apron…
